My perfect date starts early on a Saturday, so we're the road to Solvang by 8 a.m. For the scenic route, take Pacific Coast Highway north to Santa Barbara and then take Highway 154 over the San Marcos Pass to this Danish-style community in the Santa Ynez Valley.

The line between fact and fiction can get pretty fuzzy sometimes.
“His profile looked OK — he said he was 45, a few years older than me, we e-mailed, and agreed to meet for dinner.”
Ellen, an attractive 30-something who manages a pharmaceutical company, shook her head in amused dismay.
“He was like 80 years old! I mean, he was older than my dad. I asked him, why? Why did he lie, why did he think I would ever want to go out with him? He just said he thought we’d be a good match. So I just said good-bye, and fled.” |

Life has a rich and full-bodied taste in the wine country.
I was on a “sip and cycle” bike tour, pedaling and tasting my way through the back roads of Sonoma on an afternoon as cool and crisp as this wine country’s ubiquitous Chardonnays. Cycling past the century-old vines of Bella Vineyards, I saw the final tasting venue come into view. The weathered farmhouse of an organic winery — Preston Vineyards — loomed ahead in all its rustic glory. |

Dear Simon,
I’m heading up to Sonoma with a couple of friends for a four-day tour of the local vineyards. My friends can tell the difference between a Cabernet and a Merlot blindfolded (I actually think this is a game they like to play). I’m a beer-on-tap guy and don’t know diddly-squat about wine
